OFFLINEDay
A Half-Day Retreat
Ara Mekân OFFLINEDay:
A Half-Day Retreat
17 October 2026 | 12:00–18:00 | Rutschbahn 8, Hamburg
It's not easy to switch off our screens. By their very nature, our attention is constantly being drawn elsewhere: to notifications, to algorithms, to an endless stream of information. Our brains are tired. When the person closest to us is speaking to us, our thoughts wander elsewhere. Perhaps we don't realise it, but our brains aren't equipped to handle so many stimuli. We were never meant to be.
OFFLINEDay is all about this. For six hours, we're going back to 1995, but with our current knowledge. No smartphones. No Wi-Fi. Instead: hobbies, a backgammon tournament, creative writing, silence in the garden.
Four Stations
Different hobbies and different people at each station. The best way to find out what appeals to you is to give them a go. You can bring your own hobbies or try something new.
Board Games and Backgammon Tournament
Backgammon is more than just a game. It's about time, strategy and observing your opponent closely. It's been played for thousands of years. The choice is entirely yours: you can enter the tournament or just play for fun. The sound of the dice is the perfect way to keep your memory sharp and transport you back to childhood memories!
Creative Writing
Pen and paper. Writing digitally doesn't engage the brain quite as much. A writing facilitator will be there to guide you, and you can write your own story or draw inspiration from a given scenario. Sharing your writing is entirely voluntary. There is also a collective writing session; if you've never tried it before, let us tell you that it's quite different from the writing practices you've been used to so far.
Acrylic Painting
Since the dawn of human history, painting has been one of the most important ways we express ourselves. Depicting what we see, what we remember, and what inspires us is, in a way, creating a record of a moment in our lives. That's why there's no such thing as a 'right' or 'wrong' painting. Mixing colours however you please, making plenty of mistakes, finding a different path through those mistakes, setting perfectionism aside and showing the courage to create. That is precisely the aim. It's an activity full of self-compassion and discovery.
Meditation and Deep Listening
The garden at Ara Mekân is peaceful. You can listen to the birdsong, practise meditation under guidance, or simply sit and do nothing. Deep listening meditations aren't just about music; they're actually about being mindful of all the sounds around you. We'd suggest that those who aren't keen on breath-based meditations give sound-based meditation a go.
Tea Break in the Kitchen
You're welcome to take a break and relax in the kitchen whenever you like. Refreshments are available. We also have another relaxation area next to the group room; simply let us know if you'd like some time on your own.
Who is this retreat for?
It's open to anyone who works long hours, spends a lot of time in front of screens, and isn't happy with this way of life. For those wishing to take a break from digital life, discover new hobbies, or make time for a meaningful life and deep conversations. We've designed this retreat with you in mind. As two psychologists, we'll ensure this space remains consistent, safe and tailored to your needs. Both conversation and silence are part of the day. You know best what you need. Please don't hesitate to share.
A small group
In our view, large groups diminish the impact of what we're aiming to achieve. We'll accompany you with genuine encounters, plenty of space, plenty of time and the utmost attention. We believe that with a small group, we'll be able to forge closer and more meaningful connections. That's why we're keeping places limited. If there are no places left, let's say we'll see you at the next retreat.
Warm regards,
Deniz & Dila
